The area was settled in 1879 by three men who were improving a trail and brought their families in. When a name for a future community was proposed, the names Vine Maple Valley and Maple Ridge were suggested. A vote was taken by writing the names on slips of paper and placing them in a hat. Vine Maple Valley won by 2/3, but the word "Vine" was later cut by the post office because it made the name too long. The town's early history mainly had to do with coal, lumber milling to build homes, and a railroad which ran through town.
The City is 5.8 square miles, located east of Kent and Covington, and north of Black Diamond. Maple Valley is located about 30 minutes east of Seattle and Tacoma, equidistant from the water of Puget Sound and the landscapes of the Cascade Mountains. Maple Valley offers an extraordinary location to enjoy all that our region has to offer. The average temperature range is from winter lows of 32 degrees/43 degrees highs, to summer lows of 51 degrees/75 degrees highs.
The City of Maple Valley has two developed parks, Lake Wilderness Park and Take-A-Break Park. The City acquired Lake Wilderness Park from King County in January 2003. At 108 acres, Lake Wilderness Park is a large regional park with lots of prime shoreline, preserved forestland, and meandering pathways. Located within the park is Lake Wilderness Lodge and executive conference center. Adjacent to the park is the 40-acre Lake Wilderness Aboretum.
Maple Valley has three lakes, two golf courses, and several miles of trails, including the Green to Cedar Rivers Trail that connects to the Cedar River Trail. Parks and Recreation Department offers many recreational activities throughout the year including: tennis lessons, day camp, adult softball, adult volleyball, and adult basketball.
